Attack on World Trade Center Towers

The first set of color photos were taken on September 11, 2001, between 9 am and 10 am from the top of our 3-story Brooklyn building just after the two planes crashed into the World Trade Center towers (less than 4 miles away from us) but before the collapse of the buildings.

The second set of three photos — the ones placed side-by-side with — were taken from our roof four days later on September 15, after most of the smoke had cleared.

The photos (bottom) were taken 24 hours after the attacks (Sept. 12) directly across the East River from lower Manhattan.

SEPT. 11: This shot and the one below were taken about 5 or 10 minutes before the collapse of the first tower. After that a tremendous cloud of white smoke completely obscure all visibility from our area. Notice the debris (in the bottom photo) raining down in front of the tower on the left (1000 mm lens). SEPT. 15: Below, some residual smoke rises from where the towers once stood (1000 mm lens).

Day Two (Sept. 12)

The following photos were taken from the Brooklyn Heights Promenade — looking west across the East River to lower Manhattan — about 24 hours after the planes crashed into the WTC towers. The plume of smoke is rising from the still smoldering rubble. With increasing magnification the photos show the site of the plume, which partially shrouds the damaged 3 World Financial Center building across lower Manhattan to the west side. That building used to be completely hidden by the World Trade Center towers. The foreground buildings are on the east side of lower Manhattan.

SEPT. 12: The arrow shows the 3 World Financial Center building (85 mm lens).

SEPT. 12: The 3 World Financial Center building veiled in smoke at center of photo (500 mm lens).

SEPT. 12: This building — 3 World Financial Center — was once blocked from this view by the World Trade Center building (1000 mm lens).

SEPT. 17: Shell of the 2 World Trade Center tower, from four blocks south.

SEPT. 17: Closeup of the 2 World Trade Center shell, from four blocks south (500 mm lens).

SEPT. 27: Shell of the 1 World Trade Center tower, looking west from two blocks away (200 mm lens).

SEPT. 19: George Washington statue in Union Square, NYC, decorated with memorials and peace messages.

1990: This 11-year-old photo (taken from the Ellis Island ferry) shows the 3 World Financial Center building (across West Street from the now collapsed World Trade Center towers) — second building from the left. The perspective in this photo is looking due north towards lower Manhattan (to the left of the other photos above).
